[He stared for a second, surprised by just how young she was before offering a slight nodded to confirm.]

Yes, that's right, though more precisely on how you managed to help create them as Yuri had put it. I would deeply appreciate it.

Hm...let me know if you need more clarification on anything. Our worlds might work differently or have different terms.

In summary, we were converting aer into mana, its more stable form, but we needed an immense power source to do it. We used something called an apatheia. It's a stone made of dense crystallized aer that is left behind when an Entelexeia dies. Besides that, we also required a method to freely manipulate the aer, which...Estelle was able to do that herself. ...Uh, basically, we channeled aer into the apatheia until we had enough power for the conversion. Everything up to then was what I expected, but the actual creation of the Spirit was a surprise. The apatheia was more than just a stone; it was almost like the will of the Entelexeia still existed inside it and somehow our method allowed it to come to life again, but as a being that could manipulate mana and elemental forces.

If you want, I can try to prepare something more detailed. It won't be exact, since we were kind of too busy running around and trying to save the world for me to really study it thoroughly.

Are you planning on trying to create a Spirit here?

[He carefully listened and the more in depth she went into it, pure amazement and excitement was visible on his face. Klarth allowed his brain to wrap around this new enticing information before speaking himself.]

Apatheia. Entelexeia. Aer. You're certainly right that there are terms I don't recognize though mana and summon spirits seem synonymous. There may be some other term that coincides with them as well. It's very fascinating.

To begin, can you elaborate on what exactly an Entelexeia is and what it's purpose was in your world prior to the conversion? And furthermore, how that conversion affected your world as a whole? If what you're claiming is true, then perhaps the spirits I possess have been created in a similar manner.

Have you met Judith? Even in a city this size, I think it'd be hard to miss her flying around on Ba'ul--he's an Entelexeia. The Spirits aren't much different from them, but the Entelexeia didn't have the ability to affect mana or natural forces. In terms of power, though, they were way beyond humans or monsters. Mostly their focus was on maintaining the balance of aer in our world.

Aer is something that exists everywhere on Terca Lumereis and affects everything--it's a fundamental component of all forces and matter, and influences everything from the growth of organisms to the weather. It's created from springs of a sort, which are called aer krenes, and the volume of aer they produce is based on an equilibrium with the environment. So if aer is being consumed somewhere, the aer krenes will automatically compensate and release more.

Now this actually became a big issue...thanks to humans. Ancient civilizations created a technology called blastia that ran on aer for fuel. And although much of that culture and knowledge was lost a long time ago, we'd been excavating blastia and using them for everything you could think of: fountains, weapons, manufacturing...Anyway, with so many in use, aer was being consumed in such massive quantities that the aer krenes became unstable and started going out of control. They were producing way more than necessary, and aer has extremely detrimental effects when it gets too dense. People get ill, monsters go crazy, and just small plants can suddenly grow into giant twisted jungles. Too much is even fatal, for all life. So the unstable aer krenes were a huge danger to everything, but the Entelexeia could take in the excess aer and stabilize the aer krenes for a time. But eventually, it was just too much and they couldn't keep up with it.

We came across one completely stable aer krene, though. It was in some ice floes in the north, where somehow, most of the aer had been converted to matter--maybe it was frozen in the ice, or...Well, what matters right now was that it wasn't going out of control like the others. It gave me the idea to convert aer into mana, since mana is closer to matter. That method I already told you about, and it worked out perfectly.

I...don't know for sure all the changes that it's responsible for yet, though. It only happened just recently, and it wasn't the only huge change we made to the world. One thing that's certain is that the Spirits can use their abilities to revitalize the world. Places that were completely dead because of the aer have been revived.

[Oh, yes. He gave an 'ah' look to her question, recalling seeing something flying in the sky as he often stared out his window. Simply amazing. He listened further.

This was sounding more and more familiar. Maybe too familiar. Ancient civilization. The discovery of useful but destructive technology... the fault of humans. He gave a grave look as that thought sat and he softly commented beginning with a sigh.]

Humans, huh? It seems the same in any world. Ours isn't much different. Magitechnology, we call it, recovered from the ancients through extensive research. Technology beyond what anyone could have imagined. [He weakly laughed.]

It certainly made things more convenient, however like anything, there were severe repercussions. Due to human ambition, a weapon called the Mana Cannon was created. A machine that consumes massive quantities of mana, concentrating it at a single point and releasing it towards its enemy. The kingdom was determined to use it for war. Well, as a result, it was depleting the amount of mana far too rapidly from the world for the spirits to maintain a natural balance.. which I'm certain you can imagine what would have happened if all the source of life were to disappear.

But I see. [Looking more thoughtful now.] In theory, the equivalent to these "aer krenes" may be the locations where the spirits were found in my world. I've noticed there were higher concentration of mana from each though the world tree has always been its main source. Perhaps that last stable aer krene is the same, hence why you were able to convert the Apatheia. Please tell me, how many have you converted to spirits including their names?

[Rita's own look was one of astonishment and great interest. Everything sounded all too similar; could it be just coincidence? Different timelines--there was the possibility they were even from the same world, but ages apart. She was excited, intrigued, and even a little shaken from imagining the implications. More, she needed to know more.]

Y-yeah. That sounds way too familiar to me, too. Lots of blastia were made into some pretty monstrous war tools by power-hungry idiots...

...And there's more. We found out blastia cores had been created from crushed apatheia. Ancient humans killed the Entelexeia to make their blastia, not just creating an aer imbalance but destroying the very creatures that kept the world safe.

Not only that, but when the aer situation became critical, a giant monster appeared that tried to eat the entire planet. It was called the Adephagos, and...it was the result of Entelexeia who had ingested too much aer while trying to restore balance.

Reincarnating the Entelexeia into Spirits was also a way for us to combat the Adephagos. To do that, we first created Spirits of the four main elements: the Entelexeia called Belius became Undine, who controlled water; Gusios became Gnome, the earth Spirit; Khroma turned into Sylph, the Spirit of wind; and Phaeroh became Efreet, who had power over fire. Then we converted every existing blastia core in the world into Spirits, and used their combined power against the Adephagos. All the Entelexeia that had gone out of control--this caused them to be reborn too. To be honest, I don't know the exact number of Spirits there are now, but it was in the hundreds at least. I'm pretty sure the main four we first created were the most powerful, though.

...So did any of that sound familiar, too? And I'd like to know about this 'world tree'.

Crushed? [He couldn't believe it. Her story was sounding more and more like a nightmare. Is that what could have happened if they hadn't stopped Dhaos or the magitechnology? It was unimaginable but there was clearly a connection between it and the summon spirits. Then it hit home. The same exact spirits that Yuri had mentioned.]

The Four Great Spirits, yes, those are the ones I've formed a pact with along with eight others-- Maxwell, Luna, Shadow, Aska, Volt, Origin, Gremlin Lair, and Pluto. However, you mentioned hundreds. Hundreds of these cores converting to spirits. To think there were that many a long time ago. [Sounding really ecstatic about it.] Perhaps there's a link between our worlds.

All right. Let me explain as much as I know of the world tree or more so the Great Tree, Yggdrasill. A Tree spirit by the name of Martel, once spoke of how mana is born from the tree, producing enough mana for the entire world. Mana depletion by magic alone wouldn't normally harm the tree, however, as I mentioned before because of the magitechnology it was on the verge of dying though it's now taken care of. A good friend of mine placed a barrier around it to stop its flow and for it to accumulate within so that it may germinate a Great Seed. Either way, that is its main purpose.

[Her expression became one of wild-eyed excitement as she realized what could very well be another link.]

On Terca Lumireis, there was a city with a unique barrier blastia--most cities needed barriers to keep safe from monsters. Anyway, this blastia had merged with a life form: a giant tree. And since that blastia would have become a Spirit...

[She trailed off, knowing he'd be able to see where she was going with this.]

Wow. The more I hear, the more plausible it sounds--there's gotta be some connection between our worlds, or maybe...maybe we're from the same world, at different times. In this place, it could be possible!

[Resisting the urge to cackle like a maniac, she took some deep breaths herself. His compliment caused her face to flush slightly, though she tried to brush it off.]

Y-yeah, well...I'm a mage, after all. Really, I don't think I've met anyone else yet who was as excited about the Spirits as this. And...you said something about making pacts with them, right? Did you use their help for the mana problems?

[His own eyes widened as she continued. Lips quivering with excitement as he softly began.]

It may very well had been Martel! Ha! It makes sense. I can't believe it! This is... This is simply amazing!

[He nodded in agreement.]

It's possible indeed. I've experienced time travel firsthand to other eras of my world though mainly to the future. Perhaps you're from a time before mine.

Yes, that's correct. Precisel- ah, well, part of the reason why I've sought to form pacts with them , ha ha ha. [He corrected himself with a weak smile.] One can form a pact with these spirits through a series of preparations including the possession of specific summoning artifacts-- Special rings that correspond to each spirit. [He pulled out from his pouch the aquamarine ring to show Rita.] For instance, this one in particular is for Undine. Furthermore, they'll often times challenge you to a battle in order to earn their trust and prove worthy of possessing such powers. That's how I've managed to form mine. Of course, none possible without the help of my friends. [He warmly smiled to the thought of them.]

Oh? A mage. That explains quite a bit. Are you part of the elf race then?

This really is amazing! And--you said you've timetraveled before? That was--or is going to be--possible where you were? What was the future like?

[A pair of maniacs, these two. Rita didn't calm down at all while she listened to him describe the pacts. If anything, she was even more gleeful.]

Incredible...I'd love to take a closer look at these rings. Maybe we really can bring a Spirit here!

[Her expression calmed just slightly and she smiled. She knew how wonderful it was to have friends supporting them.]

I know the feeling. It would've been impossible to accomplish everything we did if we weren't all working together.

An elf? No, I'm a human. I've never heard of an elf--maybe it was a new race?

That's right. Through the use of Origin's powers and the Eternal sword. Time travel is still a fairly new concept and isn't of common practice by no means nor should it be encouraged. However, it was a necessity on our part that we discover it in order to find and defeat our enemy, Dhaos. His ability to jump from one era to the next with ease made it nearly impossible to stop him from destroying our world without it.

[He carefully spoke. That's right. People shouldn't toy with the delicate balance of time. He looked up at her.]

Hm, the future? [He gave it another thought before answering.] The future, huh... Truly, much had progressed compared to my time though I would have hoped some of the hearts of those inhabiting there would have grown as well.

[The gleeful look on her face made it hard for him not to return it with his own. And they always picked on him about being the only maniac. Ha! He slightly grinned to hear the last part of that line.]

Oh, but they can! I've already managed to summon several during my time here. Mainly to protect myself and others of course. [Though deep down he wanted to show them off badly. The fruit of his research!]

[He calmed down and warmly smiled at her now. Seemed every generation was the same when it came to friendship. But then his expression faltered to hear the next. Never heard of an elf? Something wasn't right. Though she is very young. Maybe the term was different. He scrambled for words.]

A-Ah, perhaps there's a difference in terminology again. Or possibly the definition of 'mage'. What precisely does a mage do in your world?

[She cocked her head in curiosity, as 'Origin' and 'Eternal Sword' didn't mean anything to her, with the exception of one possibility. Nevertheless, she nodded her understanding of the complications implied in timetravel.

Their hearts, huh? So then humans really don't learn, do we?

[It was a sobering and depressing thought, after they had found the belief that humans were capable of changing as a whole. Were they wrong?]

...Could you tell me more about this Origin and sword? And Dhaos, too. I don't recognize any of those, but maybe there's still a connection.

Mages like me are mostly scholars who work on the study of blastia, as well as aer and magic by extension. There are some specialized fields depending on what they're most interested in, but that's the basic focus.

Hm, of course.

[He noticed that look on her face. Oh, how many times he's had the same expression on his own when discovering something new. Ok, ok, time to keep his cool. He had to play it smooth here. He spoke with his authoritative voice falling into teacher mode.]

Now now, I'm not certain if they'd appreciate my calling without a meaningful purpose. [He paused with arms across his chest and a hand at his chin before continuing, trying hard to hide his grin.] However~ being the same lover of science and research, how can I refuse. If you insist, I suppose I could manage to show you at least a little bit.

[He decided to listen on before answering her requested information. His eyebrows slightly arched, hearing the expected.]

Haaa... As I figured. There is a slight difference. Mages are known to specialize in using magic. Mainly elves and half-elves, who possess the power to use magic at free will unlike humans. Many pursue the path to become scholars and researchers but there's nothing that states that they must. A preference I suppose you could call it much like how you mentioned. They study what they find interest in. That's why elves are known to be very intelligent and knowledgeable of various things.

Hence why a human such as myself was left to resort to the art of summoning instead of actual magic, simply because I can't use it. [Oh, how it pained him to say that.]

But anyway, you asked about Origin, the Eternal Sword, and Dhaos, correct?

All right, I suppose starting with Dhaos would make things easier to understand. [He took a moment to think of his words carefully. His perception of him had dramatically changed since then. He softly began.]

Dhaos.. the demon king was what he was known for. Causing destruction to the lands and taking innocent lives with no remorse. He was determined to end the human race and exterminate the use of magitechnology if it meant saving his own world, Derris-Kharlan-- another world separate from ours is what we gathered.

The pact with Origin-- the spirit of creation and source of all things-- and the Eternal Sword were two means to stop him. The Eternal Sword or the Sword of Time, was the result of combining three things using Origin's power-- the fire sword Flamberge, the ice sword Vorpal Blade and Thor's Diamond Ring. It allowed us to combat Dhaos's time-traveling powers, as well as gain access to his castle protected by a time barrier. [He let out a deep sigh. There were no regrets despite the situation, at least that's what he continued to tell himself. They were both fighting for their own cause.]

The Great Seed I spoke of just a moment ago, is what he sought and needed. Of course, we learned of this after we've defeated him. [He weakly laughed. How things could have worked out for the better if they've only communicated.] And thus we sealed the Great Tree. [Expecting her to follow where he was going with that.]

[Rita went through several different expressions as he talked--indignation as she prepared to insist, then slight irritation that he was just messing with her, finally brushed aside by her satisfaction in the end.]

Of course. I'm sure they'd recognize research as a perfectly just reason--and it may be in the interest of freeing everybody here! They can't say no to that.

[That definitely rang a bell--but it brought up all sorts of other questions in her mind. For now, though, she decided quickly run through an explanation of this latest link.]

No, that's actually just how magic is for us, too. Normal humans can't use magic on their own, but there are exceptions--people who can use magic and manipulate the aer freely without the need for blastia. But they were called the Children of the Full Moon, and...their powers weren't really prevalent in the world anymore. In the past, they...they had willingly sacrificed their lives to keep the Adephagos from destroying the planet. The few that were left were entrusted with the blastia and became the royal family of the empire. And while all of them still possessed the ability to a tiny extent, it wasn't really enough to be of any use, except for one--Estelle.

I wonder if it's possible that the Children of the Full Moon regained their former abilities at some point. Since we fixed the aer problem, their powers shouldn't put a strain on the world like before...

And besides that...

[She was slightly conflicted now. What he had told her of the magitechnology powered by mana hit a little too close to home. There had been so many other topics of interest to discuss that she hadn't yet voiced her concerns over whether or not she was really doing the best thing for the world by replacing the old blastia with new mana-powered ones. There were no guarantees history wouldn't repeat itself--and if theirs were truly the same world, then it seemed that was exactly what would happen. But that look on his face reminded her of her regrets at losing her magic when they gave up the blastia--she knew there was no other choice and she agreed it had to be done, but it was such a big part of her.

Well, they were sharing knowledge here. It wouldn't be fair to keep this to herself.]

You know how I said that humans like me can't normally use magic either? We used to cast spells and things like that with special blastia, but those are gone now.

[She raised a hand and tapped her neck, where a golden necklace set with a small gem was clasped, looking for all the world like simple jewelry.]

About a day or so before I came to the City, I made this--a successful prototype for a new blastia to run on mana instead of aer. It's not perfect or anywhere near as powerful as the old ones, but it does let me cast spells, and it works in the City.

[She stopped there for now, letting him process that and make of it what he would.]

Sounds like our worst problems keep repeating themselves in the end. ...Your world needed the Great Seed too, didn't it? Since the tree was dying.

There's a likely chance they may have and their role changed as well with the Adephagos threat now alleviated.

[Then at that moment, his expression changed all together. Did he just hear what he thought he heard? A way for humans to use magic!? His eyes became wide and hopeful as she spoke of the possibilities until the final punchline where he hung his head a bit. But those are gone now. Drats. Oh, but wait. He mindfully stared at the necklace and as he heard the following. He knew just what it meant for something such as this-- an item similar to the magitechnology to manipulate mana in order to perform magic -- to be freely used by humans but still... he couldn't help but become enthused by the shear idea. This was truly amazing. She was brilliant.]

[Her next words brought him back to reality as he too settled into a calm and sad smile. He hated to think that Dhaos was right all along. It really seemed like humans never learn. When she asked he softly clarified.]

Ah, not necessarily. Remember how I spoke of traveling through various times? Because of the events that occurred in the past, including a war to be precise, we were able to prevent the tree from withering further in the future. A friend of mine is a healer, who is capable of using the Divine power of healing, you see. With the help from a Unicorn she was able to heal it, giving Martel the power she needed to survive.

[At the very least, his obvious enthusiasm for magic lifted her mood somewhat, even though she still had her reservations.]

Then in the name of research, how about this: You show me a summoning, and I'll show you some spells.

[Another thought ran through her mind too, however--namely, whether she could get the tools and materials needed to build another one. If the two of them put their heads together, they might be able to make some serious advancements.]

Oh, so that's how it turned out. It sounds like the situation was resolved for your world about as well as it could be...Did...you ever find out what happened to Dhaos' world?

Healers are pretty amazing, aren't they? Come to think of it, the tree of Halure--the one I mentioned earlier--did die once, and the blastia faded along with it. But Estelle's power apparently brought it back to life.

Yeah, it was. Though, unfortunately, that's something that I don't think I'll ever have the privilege of knowing. [He gave a defeated sigh.] We could only hope for the best.

Estelle. She was part of the Children of the full moon, correct? Interesting. Amongst my friends, there's a girl named Arche, a half-elf, capable of naturally manipulating mana to use magic. Where as Mint, an ordinary human girl, capable of using the divine power of healing through her staff. Though it does run in her family for her mother was a healer as well. Your friend's abilities sound like a combination of the two. Truly, the different types of people we meet. It's incredible.

There's probably nothing else you could have done. What was wrong with the other world, anyway? Was it the same mana problem?

That's right. Estelle was the only one in our time who had abilities that powerful.

It really does sound like it's all connected. This staff--it may have been similar to our blastia in some way, since people could use healing artes with a bodhi blastia too. Even then, it was rare ability...and Estelle has more incredible healing powers than anybody else I've ever seen.

[Rita nodded somberly, deciding that there wasn't any point discussing that topic further. It's not like there was anything they could do about it, anyway.

However, she grinned at his proposal. This was an opportunity she wasn't about to pass up.]

As if I'd refuse! I really want to know what the connection between our worlds really is--and...if we put our heads together, maybe we can come up with some way out of this mess.
